Slovakia's credit-worthy footballing run comes to an end

Sad to say but Slovakia couldn’t go all the way. Not many people expected them to progress as far as the knock-out stages but this they managed with an astonishing win against Italy. After Italy came Holland who have had a muted World Cup so far. But it doesn’t matter whether or not you’ve played below expectations so long as you come good when you need to and this Holland managed to do to beat Slovakia 2 – 1. Holland’s scorers were Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder. Slovakia really didn’t do much in the first half and even in the second while they threatened a couple of times early on it was clear that Slovakia had gone as far as they could. Vittek had a chance but fired the ball straight into the goalkeeper, which is surely not to be expected in the World Cup. Still, Vittek did make the score-line look a little more respectable with a last minute penalty.
All credit to Slovakia, an ice-hockey nation not a footballing nation. (Nor of course is New Zealand who even had one part-timer on their team!) This result will give Slovakia confidence for the 2014 World Cup.
